Install

Packages

Babel is distributed in the following packages:

  • Babel Desktop installers: a Windows installer (NSIS .exe) and MSI, a macOS .dmg and .zip, and Linux AppImage, .deb and .rpm packages. Babel Desktop manages licensing from the desktop; see Babel Desktop.
  • Licensing service zips: babel_service_net60_<version>.zip, babel_service_net70_<version>.zip, babel_service_net80_<version>.zip, babel_service_net90_<version>.zip and babel_service_net100_<version>.zip. One package serves both the Server and Data Center editions; there is no separate Data Center package.
  • Obfuscator zips: babel_net472_<version>.zip, babel_net80_<version>.zip, babel_net90_<version>.zip and babel_net100_<version>.zip. They contain the babel and lic command lines, HardwareId and the MSBuild task.
  • NuGet packages: Babel.Licensing, Babel.Licensing.Tool and Babel.Data, plus Babel.Obfuscator and Babel.Obfuscator.Tool.

The Windows MSI installers of earlier versions (babel_obfuscator_<version>.msi and babel_licensing_<version>.msi) and the macOS package (babel_mac_<version>.zip) are no longer distributed. To manage licensing from the desktop, install Babel Desktop. Use the zip packages or NuGet tools for the command line.

Server Components

Babel Licensing Service is a .NET application, so it runs on Windows, Linux and macOS. The following guides explain how to install it:

Supported databases

Babel Licensing Service 12.0 supports SQL Server, MySQL/MariaDB, SQLite and PostgreSQL on Windows, Linux and macOS. Select the provider in the service configuration; Babel Desktop connects to the service endpoint, not directly to its database.

Configure and start the Licensing Service yourself, including a local SQLite service. Babel Desktop does not install, start or stop it. Point the Desktop connection profile at the service’s HTTP/HTTPS endpoint.

Client Components

To integrate Babel Licensing into your .NET applications and software components, you will need to install the Babel Licensing client components. These components include the Babel Licensing NuGet package and the Babel Data NuGet package.

  1. Babel Licensing NuGet Package: The client library that talks to Babel Licensing Services. It adds license validation, activation and enforcement to your .NET applications, with online and offline license key verification, license generation and license lifecycle management.
  2. Babel Data NuGet Package: Types for accessing the Babel Licensing Database, used together with the Babel Licensing package. It includes data models, repositories and utilities for retrieving license information, managing license data and running database operations.

To install the client components, add the NuGet packages to your .NET projects.
