Install
Babel Desktop ships as a native installer for each operating system. Each installer includes the application runtime and a self-contained .NET runtime, so the machine does not need Node.js or .NET. Download the package for your platform and processor architecture from the babelfor.NET download area .
License requirements
| License edition | Supported platforms |
|---|---|
| Enterprise | Windows |

A demo license can be used for evaluation. Licensing management also requires the appropriate Babel Licensing Server or Data Center entitlement.
| Platform | Package | Updates |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | babel-desktop-<version>-win-x64.exe (per-user installer) | Automatic, from inside the application |
| Windows | babel-desktop-<version>-win-x64.msi (per-machine installer) | Managed by your IT deployment tools |
| macOS | babel-desktop-<version>-mac-arm64.dmg or .zip | Automatic, from inside the application |
| Linux | babel-desktop-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage | Automatic, from inside the application |
| Linux | babel-desktop-<version>-linux-amd64.deb, babel-desktop-<version>-linux-x86_64.rpm | Through the system package manager |
Each download folder also contains a SHA256SUMS file you can use to verify the packages.
Windows
Per-user installer (EXE). Run babel-desktop-<version>-win-x64.exe. It does not need administrator rights. You can pick the installation folder, and the installer adds a Start menu shortcut. This installation updates itself; see Updates.
Per-machine installer (MSI). The MSI installs Babel Desktop for every user on the machine. Use it for managed deployments such as Group Policy or Intune. It can install silently:
msiexec /i babel-desktop-<version>-win-x64.msi /qnAn MSI installation does not update itself. To upgrade, deploy the MSI of the new version.
Your settings and user data stay on the machine when you uninstall Babel Desktop.
The installed application is named Babel Obfuscator in the Start menu, in Launchpad and in the desktop menu of Linux.
Application Integrity
On Windows and macOS, Babel Desktop checks its application files every time it starts. If any of them has been modified since installation, for example by a tool that patches applications, Babel Desktop closes before its window opens. Install the same package again to repair it; your settings and projects stay as they are.
Babel Desktop cannot be started as a Node.js process. It ignores the ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE, NODE_OPTIONS and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS environment variables and the --inspect and --inspect-brk command line options.
Proxy and Certificates
Babel Desktop uses the proxy settings of the operating system and trusts the same certificate authorities it does, for sign-in, updates, the extension catalog, the documentation and the Licensing connections. If your network inspects TLS traffic with its own certificate authority, add that authority to the system certificate store on Windows and macOS, or on Linux to the shared NSS database (~/.pki/nssdb) that Chromium-based browsers use.
Next, load your license: see Product Activation.
